Reaching Out Award

I am deeply honoured to have been selected for the Singapore exchange study tour organised by Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and to receive the Reaching Out Award Scholarship.  The competition for limited places on the tour was intense, so when I was notified of my successful entry, I felt thrilled and knew I had to make the most of this rare opportunity.  To my surprise and delight, I later found out that the scholarship would cover the expenses of the trip, which not only heightened my excitement, but also allowed me to fully focus on the invaluable learning experience ahead. 

As someone who had never been to Singapore and a stranger to its culture, I found the trip to be truly enlightening.  I was able to gain insight into the country’s healthcare system, and had the opportunity to visit famous local attractions such as the Night Safari and Gardens by the Bay.  Exploring and experiencing the ambiance, rhythm and culture of the Lion City in my own way was a profound experience that left a lasting impression on me.  I would not have learnt nearly as much if I had relied solely on word of mouth or online resources instead of firsthand experience.

During the tour, I visited some nursing-related venues, including nursing homes, the Enabling Village and simulation laboratories.  Through these visits, I gained knowledge of the nursing care provided for the local elderly and disabled populations in Singapore.  The Enabling Village, in particular, was an eye-opener for me as I came to realise how technology can assist the disabled in overcoming daily living challenges and breaking down the barriers posed by physical disabilities, bringing greater accessibility, convenience and comfort to their lives.

Meeting and interacting with NYP nursing students were among the highlights of the trip.  I was impressed by their passion for nursing, as well as their love for people and life.  Despite their packed schedules filled with studies, part-time jobs and extracurricular activities, they generously made time to give us a warm welcome and serve as our tour guides during our one-week stay at NYP.  Indeed, the tour offered us a privileged opportunity to share experiences, learn from each other and build connections.

In retrospect, I recognised that there were a few things I could have handled differently during the trip.  One of these was to make a greater effort to socialise with other students on the tour.  Initially, I was hesitant to do so, but later realised that I had missed out on a valuable chance to forge new friendships.

Overall, I found the tour to be a very enjoyable experience although there were some challenging moments, such as taking public transport in the city for the first time.  At first, I was a bit overwhelmed trying to figure out the different routes, but I eventually managed to navigate the system and get around on my own.

The exchange tour has helped me develop my adaptability, cultural competence and resilience.  In addition, what I have learnt about Singapore’s healthcare system and its operation is invaluable and will be applicable to my future practice.  More importantly, I have come to appreciate that nursing is a global profession and that learning from peers from around the world can be highly rewarding.  All in all, the skills and knowledge I gained from the tour have equipped me better for my future studies and will be highly beneficial to my nursing career.
