May I first sincerely appreciate the Education Bureau and Shue Yan University for providing me the precious opportunity to step out from Hong Kong and experience something new. Nepal is one of the happiest countries in the world; however, Nepali are not wealthy and they live ordinarily. This makes me curious about how would the country, Nepal, be?
The phrase “One’s life influences the others” can be used to describe this Volunteer Service Programme. The organizer has arranged us to go to an orphanage located in Pokhara, Nepal. My main duty there is to take care of the kids, for instance, fetching the kids to school, taking them home after school and doing homework with the kids. “One’s life influences the others” usually describes the process of education. In my opinion, this programme is a process of mutual education. On the one hand, I taught the kids some linguistic knowledge and Chinese culture; on the other hand, I was learning their attitude towards life when I got along with them. They are optimistic, cheerful and they seldom complain anything. These are the characteristics that I do not have.
Although the kids do not live with their parents, they live with contented mind and happiness every day. I only spent one week with the kids, but we have built up great affection with each other. During the farewell, each of them has given me a big hug and asked when my next time to come will be. I really appreciate their attitude of not saying goodbye but looking forward to meeting again in future. I have found out my weaknesses through the volunteer programme. I will enrich myself and follow my footsteps to Nepal once more in the future.
