The scholarship awarded by the Self-financing Post-secondary Education Fund is a powerful motivation for me to continue my studies. As a mature and working student, it has been tough for me to make ends meet every month. Even though my husband has been really supportive, I need to get a part-time job to meet my expenses. I used to struggle with my studies in secondary school as I was not as smart as my classmates. The Outstanding Performance Scholarship recognises the efforts that I have expended, and proves that I can accomplish anything if I put my heart into it. Having worked for many years in the education field, I believe that getting a degree will help me go further as an Early Childhood Education (ECE) teacher.
I have always known that being an ECE teacher is my calling, which is also my way of using my talent to contribute to society. Over the years, I have had many different jobs and tried many things. I was a member of a theater stage crew, worked in an ice-cream store, and followed my passion to become an art designer. But none of them has ever brought me as much satisfaction as teaching children. As a professional ECE teacher, the biggest challenge is to work diligently and lead a disciplined life. I keep reflecting on my teaching approach as an ECE teacher. This helps me choose my words and conduct myself more carefully in front of children. In the spirit of the lyrics of the famous song Greatest Love Of All (“I believe children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside. Give them a sense of pride to make it easier…”), I believe that, with love and patience, we can help our children live up to their true potential so that when they grow up, they can pay it forward by grooming the next generation.
I always encourage my younger peers to take responsibility for their own learning. Self-directed learning is not something you do to please anyone or to show off; it is done to help pave the way for a promising future. It will pique your curiosity for more in-depth knowledge and open up new opportunities for you. Setting small and achievable goals helps you move forward step by step. Take heart and keep trying! Don’t be afraid of making mistakes as they offer lessons that will prepare you for a brighter future.
