UOW College Hong Kong/ Community College of City University
As a graduating student of the Associate of Science in Information Systems Development programme of the UOW College Hong Kong (UOW College), I have always been passionate about studying information technology and it is a dream of mine to become a software engineer someday. Looking back, information technology was such an abstract concept that I initially found it hard to grapple with, let alone focusing on the study of it. But having learnt so much in the past two years, I am pleased that I have made the efforts.
When my learning journey began in 2017, I was intimidated by the competitive learning environment and nervous about my performance. Fortunately, the programme covered a broad range of topics that continued to fuel my curiosity and equip me with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The most intriguing part of the programme should be the final year group project, which usually requires students to make a prototype of an application. It was the perfect platform for me to apply what I learnt in class, including the knowhow in object-oriented programming and Model-View-Controller pattern. These skills are useful not only in creating applications but also to my future career.
I got an internship at a web designing company during the summer of 2018. It was my first foray into the technology industry. I was given plenty of opportunities to participate in web projects and take part in designing the layout of websites. I also learnt to cater for clients’ various demands by applying my designing skills flexibly. I felt a sense of accomplishment whenever I received favourable feedback from clients. The two-month internship was an enlightening experience that really expanded my web designing and coding skills.
I take pleasure in my academic growth with all the knowledge and skills that I have attained. But it was not all plain sailing. To tackle difficulties encountered in the learning process, I either explored resources on the Internet or sought help and advice from teachers. There are always solutions for our problems so long as we have the will to find them. Challenges are what motivate me!
Recently I received a conditional admission offer from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). I was so excited because it has been my goal to further my study by pursuing an undergraduate programme in computer science in the HKUST. When I shared the news with my family and friends, they were very supportive of my decision to continue my study. All my hard work in the past two years has paid off!
I am glad to have chosen the UOW College, which has given me valuable learning opportunities and experiences. I will keep my passion for learning alive and strive to become a better person every day. I am also thankful to the Education Bureau for granting me the Outstanding Performance Scholarship in recognition of my academic achievements. I am deeply encouraged by the award and will carry on with the efforts to fulfil my dream.
