From getting rich to being hired by a big firm or learning a new language, aspirations are personal and often have roots in one’s career or interest. While they may seem insignificant and trivial to the wider community, I believe that it takes these small steps from everyone to bring about the betterment of society.
I reckon that social workers can bridge the gap between society and the underprivileged. They also shoulder the heavy responsibility of improving people’s lives. My aspiration, therefore, is to pursue a master’s degree in social work after completing my undergraduate programme.
I am most grateful to the Hong Kong Shue Yan University for its nomination and to the Education Bureau for the award of Outstanding Performance Scholarship. The award means a lot to me because it is not just a recognition of my efforts and academic performance; it also helps my family out with my father’s cancer medication expenses. I have tried my best to take care of my father during the COVID-19 epidemic, escorting him to and from the hospital. It has been an uphill struggle for my family to settle my father’s medical bills. But I have kept telling myself to stay hopeful and bring positivity to my family.
My father likes to say, “It matters not how good you are but how good you want to be.” It is this very motto that guides me through all the hardships and inspires me to seek self-improvement. I have been taught to contribute and keep going since I was small, so I believe perseverance is the key to success.
Besides study, I have dedicated myself to harmonica my whole life. Going from a beginner to a harmonica band member and from an inexperienced contestant in the Hong Kong School Music Festival to winners of the Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival and the World Harmonica Festival, I have given all of myself to excel in harmonica.
I am thankful that both my secondary school and the university have provided me with ample learning opportunities on and off campus. I will cherish the rest of my university days and work for my life goals. Although my life is not particularly eventful, I strive to give back to my schools and society with my talent and passion. I hope that I can further enhance my knowledge and broaden my horizons as well.
