I have been passionate about nature ever since I was a child. I always go to the countryside with my family and friends to enjoy the natural scenery and landscape. That is why I am gravely concern about the environmental problems the world is now facing, such as acute air pollution, global warming and fossil fuel shortage. That said, I have never thought that through my research on the environment and sustainable development, I could represent Hong Kong in international competitions, such as the International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering & Environment) Project Olympiad, not to mention winning some recognition in these competitions. I believe that such achievements are not attributable to my special talents, but to the strong curiosity I have developed since childhood.
I remember as a child, I was fascinated by the static electricity when touching metals and woollen clothing on dry winter days. Of course, a child cannot understand the principles of science but this phenomenon intrigued me. At the junior secondary level, out of curiosity and based on what I was taught in the classroom, I learnt the basic knowledge of electronics such as the thermoelectric effect. Later, at the senior secondary level when each student had to join an interest club, I joined the Science Club at the invitation of some teachers and students. These seemingly separate events are, however, conducive to shedding light on my future research.
Of course, it was impossible for me to envisage how these trivial events would be related to one another when I was young. Nevertheless, when I looked back afterwards, I could easily find out the connection between them. Therefore, I now think that although we may not know the significance of each event and its impact on our future and may even suffer some setbacks at the moment, we must believe in what we are doing. As long as we seize the day and throw ourselves into everything we do, we may discover its value when we look back afterwards.
All these experiences have made me believe that as long as we remain curious about the world and carefully observe things around us, with a little creativity and imagination, we will be able to find something we often ignore and can even bring some changes to this world. To end, I sincerely thank the Education Bureau for giving me this scholarship and teachers of the Hong Kong Community College and my alma mater, the Hong Kong Taoist Association The Yuen Yuen Institute No. 2 Secondary School, for their commitment to teaching and nurturing me. I would also like to thank the other three members of our research team, all the professors who have given me valuable advice and guidance as well as my family and friends who have been giving me continued support.
