It is my great honour to be awarded the scholarship. It has boosted my confidence and made me believe that dreams can come true through hard work and perseverance.
As a kid, I had trouble following in class as I was unable to hear my classmates when they answered teachers’ questions. I could not see the words on the blackboard as well, and I tried to tell my class teacher about my difficulties. My secondary school teachers and classmates told me to give up on conventional schooling because I could not hear what they said clearly. These experiences made me realise that I had to manage my study with minimal help. I have since learned to glean knowledge from the Internet and reference books and through self-study. Over time I find myself fascinated with the joy of exploring and seeking new knowledge on my own terms.
I encourage students with special educational needs (SEN) to try to take on their own problems and the challenges in front of them. By overcoming the obstacles themselves, they gain maturity and the respect of others. Besides, I hope they meet someone generous with their help as they embark on their careers.
I understand that students with SEN have to work twice as hard to prevail over difficulties and adversities. Through further studies, I hope that someday I can offer my support by sharing with them more comprehensive learning strategies.
I would like to thank the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong for helping me adjust to my studies. I am particularly indebted to Dr Wesley Chow, my class teacher, for encouraging me to face challenges with a positive attitude. My gratitude also goes to the Education Bureau and the school inspector for their assistance in my pursuit of higher education.
