I am Rebecca. I have been disabled since nine. After a major operation on a part of my brain, my world was changed tremendously. I cannot walk and run like any normal person. Sometimes, I am tired of having to move around with the walking frame. However, I am not as vulnerable as people think, and life must go on. I am proud of myself indeed, because so far I have been able to study in mainstream schools.
I am neither a smart nor hard-working student, but I always push my limits and strive for excellence. Although I am physically-limited, I believe that human beings are capable of creation and therefore life is beautiful. I love communicating with people from different walks of life. My physical limit has made me more optimistic and I am more able to confront the hardships that life may bring. I hope that my story can inspire people who are struggling for whatever reasons. I wish to spark a light of hope for them and convince them that when there is hope, there is a way to overcome every obstacle.
You may wonder why I take Accounting instead of Social Science. I study business because a career in accounting is my childhood dream. In the near future, I would like to use my knowledge to support the development of social enterprises in Hong Kong. I believe that nobody wants to bring trouble to others. Our society should give the physically-handicapped a chance to become more self-reliant and independent. To create a disabled-friendly community, the business sector can take the initiative to hire physically-disabled people and make the workplace more inclusive and harmonious.
One day, I will prove to everybody that physical limitation does not confine a person’s possibilities. You will be a bird if you believe you can fly.
I am really honored to be awarded scholarships in two consecutive years. It has been an incredible experience to stand on the stage of the Self-financing Post-secondary Scholarship Scheme presentation ceremony. Money does not mean everything, but it motivates me to work harder for my dreams. Nobody is perfect; you and me are no exceptions. We can only try our best to quest for perfection. Opportunity never waits for those who are not well-equipped and well-prepared. Let’s stride towards our dreams.
