First of all, I am very honoured to be awarded the Endeavor Scholarship under the Self-financing Post-secondary Education Fund. This scholarship not only provides a certain extent of financial support for my study, but also serves as recognition and approval of my efforts.
I am a disabled person born with heart disease and cerebral palsy. As my mother is also chronically ill, my father has been the main breadwinner of the family. For these reasons, I started studying and boarding in a special school when I was five in order to receive appropriate care and education. Being a weak and sickly child, I was no stranger to hospitals and surgeries. However, all these experiences have shaped me as a strong-willed, optimistic and persevering person.
I completed Form 6 last year and was exposed to an unfamiliar environment. Since then, my life seems to have entered a new stage. As my public examination results did not meet the university entrance requirements, I chose to study in the Hong Kong Community College, hoping that after two years of hard work, I will proceed to university study and become a professional social worker.
Frankly speaking, when I first set foot in the campus of this school alone, the challenges, pressures and difficulties were just overwhelming. I was worried that my slowness would hinder me from taking notes in class and making new friends, etc. As I did not have many classmates when I was younger, studying with able-bodied students in a post-secondary college always makes me feel that I am less capable. With this thought, I keep reminding myself that I must devote more time and efforts than others to my study so as to catch up with the class. Fortunately, with sufficient learning support from the school, I managed to adapt to my new life quickly. On the other hand, believing that these challenges will enrich my life experience and enable me to understand people with different experiences in my future career as a social worker, I choose to turn difficulties into challenges.
Time flies and the first year of my college life is coming to an end. This year has seen a big change in me. Worried and stressed, I was in a bad mood at the beginning. But now with a clearer goal and stronger will, I am confident that successful or not, I will not have any regret in the end!
