YEUNG Siu Fong
Higher Diploma in Fine Art
Hong Kong Art School
I am an art lover who is studying the Higher Diploma programme in Fine Art at the Hong Kong Art School.
I lost both my arms in a childhood accident. Since then I have to use my feet instead of hands for the activities of everyday life. During the past six years, I have been learning to paint with my feet. I have always had a keen interest in art from a young age but could not develop my artistic talent as my family was poor. However, after the accident, I had the chance to come into contact with art. Some teachers even offered to teach me painting free of charge. From then on, I have deeply committed to art.
Learning to paint is tough but I enjoy it very much. I understand that there is a vast difference between painting with feet and painting with hands. All the techniques used are challenges to me. To paint with feet, one must make efforts a hundredfold. I have therefore tried hard to overcome all the difficulties. In 2009, my painting was shown at the “Embracing Life Exhibition” held in Canada, Hong Kong and Guangzhou respectively. I have learnt a lot from this exhibition. I have realised that art creation is important to an artist, and so is pre- exhibition and post-exhibition work. One has to take care of everything in person so as to present one’s own work properly to the audience. The exhibition aimed to promote art culture while caring for the artistic development of the disabled. After that, I have actively participated in various drawing competitions, such as the “My Mona Lisa Drawing Competition” organised by the Centre for Community Cultural Development. In addition to being shown at the “Cross All Borders: Hong Kong Festival Showcasing New Visual Artists with Disabilities 2010” and “Cross All Borders: Hong Kong Festival Showcasing New Visual Artists with Disabilities 2012”, my works also won the bronze prize in the youth division of these two festivals. Besides, I have participated in activities to promote art. Between 2009 and 2010, I was appointed by the school as the arts ambassador under the 2nd Arts Ambassadors-in-School Scheme organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council for the promotion of art activities in school. At present, I am an artist of the Mouth & Foot Painting Artists Ltd and a registered artist with disability of the Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong. Although I have participated in various activities, I am still a long way from my goal.
Having little interest in studying since I was young, I am not outstanding in the eyes of others. While others yearn for studying at university, I just want to follow my own inclination and do what I like. That is why I choose to study the subject I like at the Hong Kong Art School. Even though most people think that there is not much prospect in studying art, I insist on learning the subject. Since I entered the Hong Kong Art School, I have got to know a group of fellow students with the same interest and belief. Together we have been working hard for our goal. Teachers in the school are active artists. Apart from imparting textbook knowledge, they share with us their experiences in art. I know that I have made the right choice which is also the first step in my career as an artist.
I believe that if we have dreams, goals and determination, the road ahead will lead to success.
